Week 6 {Technology}
This week Doni talked about technology and how it has influenced her life. She asks the question “How has technology empowered you” and it didn’t take me long to come up with an answer.
As many of you know, my grand-plan for life is to become a freelance web designer, so I can be a work-at-home mom while doing something I’m passionate about. Both Justin and I work in IT, and since we met at work, I guess you could say technology brought us together. Our current IT jobs keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellies, so it’s no exaggeration to say that technology has become a lifeline for us.
The odd thing is, years ago, I never would have guessed that technology would play such a huge role in my life. I didn’t grow up in a “techy” household, neither of my parents are very tech-savvy, and we didn’t even have a computer until well after most other families did. Actually, that’s not true, we did have an original Apple G2 when I was really little, but I don’t think that DOS prompt, or Oregon Trail empowered me much :)
It wasn’t until I met my long-distance boyfriend in 9th grade, that I started seriously using the Internet. It was our main form of communication, so I was on it constantly. It was also through his friends that I learned what Blurty and Livejournal were, and suddenly I’d found my niche. I loved the computer and I wanted to know every single thing I could about it. I ended up taking every computer class available to me in high school, and suddenly I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was determined to open a PC repair business and teach people how to use computers.
Obviously life hasn’t turned out exactly how I had planned, but I do work on a computer everyday, and then come home and play on the computer every night. In the last few years, I’ve become seriously interested in Social Media, and it has opened up a world of opportunity for me. In 2010, I traveled to Vegas with 70 other bloggers and partied like a rockstar, and then went to Washington, DC to spend a day with like-minded women, learning how to live authentically. I’ve made some lifelong friendships with people on the other side of the world, and I hope to do a lot of future traveling to spend more time with them. I’ve connected with people who have taught me more than a college professor ever could have about the awesomeness that is the Internet, and about life in general.
I know that some people don’t get it. Many can’t understand why I share so much about myself and my life on the Internet, or how I wasn’t afraid to travel across the country to meet a bunch of bloggers in the City of Sin. The fact of the matter is, I wouldn’t be where I am, or who I am, if it wasn’t for a computer and the Internet. I moved away from my hometown, so sometimes my only connection to friends from the past is Facebook, and as for making new friends, in a new city, one of my best friends in Pittsburgh is Maggie, who I met on Twitter!
To say that technology has empowered my life would be the understatement of the century. It has changed my life, in the best way possible, and I can’t wait to see what it brings for the future!
How has technology impacted your life?
